Sawgrass Country Club: Ponte Vedra Beach's Original Golf & Beach Lifestyle
Since ground was broken in 1972, Sawgrass Country Club has paired championship golf with private beach access across 1,100 gated acres.
Few communities capture the essence of Ponte Vedra Beach quite like Sawgrass Country Club. Ground was broken in 1972 under the vision of developer Jimmy Stockton. Golf and the surrounding homes were the early focal point, but the plan always included an oceanfront beach club as well. More than five decades later, the 1,100-acre gated community, set between A1A and Ponte Vedra Boulevard, remains one of the area’s most established addresses.

The Homes
Sawgrass offers a rare range of residences within one set of gates: single-family and estate-sized homes, patio homes, townhomes, condominiums, and beachfront condominiums. Within the community, you’ll find distinct enclaves such as Fisherman’s Cove, Hallmark Condos, Northgate, The Preserve, Tifton Cove, Walkers Ridge, and Windemere Condos. Waterfront and oceanfront options are both part of the mix, which means the right fit can look very different for a young family, an empty nester, or a buyer simplifying their next chapter.
The Club
Membership at Sawgrass Country Club comes in several forms: Full, Social, and Guest. A Full membership includes:
Access to both the East and West golf courses
13 tennis courts
A fitness center with a lap pool
Access to the Beach Club, with two pools, dining, and a full calendar of social events
The Beach Club is the detail that sets Sawgrass apart. Members enjoy an oceanfront setting without leaving the community they call home. For membership details, call the club directly at (904) 273-3700 or visit 10034 Golf Club Drive, Ponte Vedra Beach.
It’s worth knowing that the Club and the Sawgrass Homeowners Association operate as two separate entities. The HOA, managed by Castle Management, LLC, provides the privileges that come with living inside the gates, including limited traffic and a peaceful, secure setting, even without a club membership.
Life Inside the Gates
The beach: Residents and their accompanied guests reach the ocean through the Beach Gate on Ponte Vedra Boulevard, by bike, golf cart, or car. The access ramp, to the right of the open-air pavilion, is an easement for drop-off and pick-up only. Parking in this area is reserved for Club Members and their guests.
The community pool: Open to all residents and their accompanied guests, it sits at South Nine Drive and Sawgrass Drive.
Fishing and boating: The lakes and wetlands throughout Sawgrass are ideal for fishing. Park areas on Preston Trail along Lake Julia, Deer Run, and Osprey Point are local favorites. Boating is limited to non-gas-powered vessels during daylight hours, and the Association asks that anglers and boaters stay clear of golf play and private property.
Families and Schools
Sawgrass is zoned for PVPV/Rawlings Elementary, Landrum Middle School, and Ponte Vedra High School, all part of the top-rated St. Johns County school system. Private options nearby include Episcopal School of Jacksonville, Bolles School, Providence School of Jacksonville, and Bishop Kenny.
As more families have relocated to the area, the Club has expanded its programming for younger residents, including kids’ night out, after-school programs, summer camps, movie nights, a swim team, and child care.
Location and Lifestyle
Sawgrass sits just 20 minutes south of Jacksonville in St. Johns County, which Stacker.com has named the highest-earning county in Florida. St. Augustine is about 30 minutes south on A1A, and Orlando’s attractions are a two-hour drive for an easy weekend away. Cooler months arrive from late November through mid-March, with ocean breezes in between.
Dining is a genuine perk of the address:
Fine dining: Restaurant Medure, Ruth’s Chris Steak House, TPC Sawgrass, Caffe Andiamo, Palm Valley Fish Camp, Valley Smoke, and Argyle
Casual favorites: Anejo Cocina Mexicana, Nona Blue Modern Tavern, V’s Pizza and Julep, Pusser’s Bar & Grille, Barbara Jean’s on the Water, McFlamingo, and Palm Valley Outdoors Bar & Grille
Why Sawgrass Endures
For buyers seeking an established, amenity-rich community with true golf and beach access, Sawgrass Country Club remains one of the most enduring choices in Ponte Vedra Beach. It’s a place where a round of golf, a tennis match, a swim team practice, and a sunset at the Beach Club all happen within the same gates.
